MapPack: Grasslands - unboxing

On the 35th anniversary of the game and the related brand refreshment (new starter boxes), Catalyst Games Labs has released a long-awaited product, ie new maps for playing. Let's have a look at them  in today's review.

Bez map ciężko grać - wybaczcie truizm. Stare polskie wydanie Encore'a zawierało dwie takie same mapy (zwane obecnie Classic BattleTech), więc regrywalność kulała.

Wydano trzy Hex Packi: Lakes and Rivers, Cities and Roads i Mountains and Canyons.

It's hard to play without some maps - excuse the truism. The old Polish Encore edition contained two identical maps (now called Classic BattleTech), so replayability was low. You could of course turn the map on the blank side and create your own battlefield, or start completely from scratch, but  still it's not the same. The BattleTech publishers of that time also knew about it and in the years 1985-2002 7 new sets of BT maps were created, the so-called Map Sets 1-7, with maps of different quality (eg Moonscape nightmare in Map Set 5). As stock in stores ended, in 2003-2005 Map Set Compilations 1 and 2 were released, collecting what was previously published in the previous Map Sets and space and strategic maps from BattleSpace and BattleForce 2 games. There was also a Map Pack: Solaris VII containing arena maps from Solaris VII with non-standard dimensions. The goods, however, were sold out very quickly and now it's hard to find old Map Sets on the market.

Along with the starter box for the 25th anniversary of the game, which included two-sided maps but glued onto a cardboard, the Hex Packs appeared. A Hex Pack contained one two-sided cardboard map (a copy of those already published earlier) and a new thing- cardboard hexes with additional terrain elements that could be used to modify existing maps. Three Hex Packs were released: Lakes and Rivers, Cities and Roads and Mountains and Canyons. However, the low sales results of Hex Packs caused Catalyst Games Labs to stop creating more.

Instead in 2013, MapPacks appeared in PDFs for self-printing. Still, they were old maps already known. On the one hand, it's good - because all sourcebooks and mini-additions with scenarios used the names of already published maps. On the other hand, the case needed refreshment for quite a long time. A certain light in the tunnel happened in 2018, where as part of the global BattleTech event a new set of four maps was created - three were only refreshed and slightly modified old maps, but the fourth (depicting the archaeological site) was completely new, created from scratch.

Cud, miód i orzeszki IMHO. Zestaw zawiera następujące mapy:

And here it is! Completely new (well not exactly, as you will read below) set of 6 two-sided paper maps with the same quality as in the latest starter boxes, with eye-catching details such as hills casting shadows or waves on rivers. Very beautiful IMHO. The set includes the following maps:

Foothills #1/Rolling Hills #1
Foothills #1

Rolling Hills #1
Foothills #2/ Lakes
Foothills #2

Lakes
Rolling Hills #2/CommCenter
Rolling Hills #2

Comm Center
Open Terrain #2/Woodland
Open Terrain #2

Woodland
Open Terrain #3/ Forward Base
Open Terrain #3

Forward Base
Rolling Hills #3/Streams
Rolling Hills #3

Streams

Have a look at some details showing the solicitude (the forward base has walls and places for turrets :D) and the beauty of new maps. On the back of this small card with the title there is an additional rule insert of how the elements of the areas placed on the maps work.

However, looking at the signatures, I noticed several names that I knew from the old maps (eg Rolling Hills or Woodland). So I pulled out my old maps to make a comparison. It turned out that Rolling Hills # 1 and Woodland maps have exactly the same terrain mapping as the old ones, only that they have new colors. IMO this can not be treated as a mistake or going the easy way. As I mentioned earlier, it will be easier to apply new maps to old scenarios. In addition, still 10 maps on 12 are completely new.

At the end I still compared the possibility of matching maps from old sets with new ones. Hex offsets were not found, the edges of the hexes with the river also match. If you turn your eye to the color differences, there will not be a problem with matching.

In summary, new maps are a great success for me. The topic has been asking for a restart for a long time. CGL announced more new map sets (taking into account that in the starter boxes had also desert maps, I'll bet that the next one will be Map Pack: Deserts). Recently, they also released a limited edition of neoprene mats for gaming, unfortunately only available in their online store, which caused the shipping costs from the US to exceed the value of mats. The fact that the new maps are again paper, not cardboard, is not a problem for me. First of all, I have always used paper, and secondly, for the price of one Hex Pack ($30), you get twelve maps not two. In this case, the quantity overcomes endurance - do not eat and drink over them,  hide them in a box after the game and they will serve you for years. Buy them, till they're available  are and request more from Bolter.pl. ;) And if you want old maps, you can still get a set of 10 random maps in Ral Partha Europe.

Pozdrawiam/Regards
Brathac
